Scott Benjamin was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1962, to a kindergarten teacher and a mechanical engineer. Together, they surreptitiously infected him with an enduring love of learning. As individuals, they respectively instilled in him a passion for the arts and an insatiable curiosity for how things work.

Scott Benjamin was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1962, to a kindergarten teacher and a mechanical engineer. Together, they surreptitiously infected him with an enduring love of learning. As individuals, they respectively instilled in him a passion for the arts and an insatiable curiosity for how things work.
Although his focus has only recently shifted from architecturally related imagery to the fine arts, Scott’s work is already in the collections of internationally known artists and architects. He anticipates that his style will continue to draw interest from clients whose interests are as diverse as his own.
Scott holds a B.A. in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry (Yale College), a B.S. in Architecture (University of Michigan), an M.Arch (Yale School of Architecture), and studied Anatomy and Cell Biology at the graduate level (Columbia University). Informed by his scientific background, his work—particularly in still life—explores the relationship between macro-scale realism and micro-scale abstraction. Scott lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he rows, reads about science, revels in the glory of quality television programming, and occasionally eats absolutely unspeakable food out of cans.

In my current artwork, I’ve taken a page out of David Hockney’s playbook, choosing to explore the remarkable versatility of the Apple iPad and a stylus—in this case, the Apple Pencil. These two devices give me the freedom—whenever and wherever inspiration strikes—to work both fluidly and efficiently, providing a range of artistic possibilities one would normally expect only from a studio brimming with traditional drafting and painting tools.
To be clear (since people do ask), the images I produce are the result of thousands upon thousands of individual brush strokes executed entirely by my hand. They are not photographs that have been retouched, filtered, or otherwise modified, nor do they contain even the most minute fragments of photographs. These are paintings in the truest sense, produced de novo on a digital canvas.
After a painting has been completed, I work collaboratively with extremely talented printers and framers—artists all—to ensure an integrated work of art of the highest quality.

Inspiration can arise from something as simple as the shift in perception that occurs when an otherwise overlooked object casts a particularly beautiful shadow.
